Recently completed late in December 2007, our Natural Resource Inventory (NRI) is the product of a three year comprehensive study of all flora and fauna located on the 84 acre Ironwood Outdoor Center property.
This inventory of species occuring on the Ironwood property is a vital tool for land management decisions and protecting and enhancing habitat. Plants and animals are natural indicators of ecosystem health, and therefore knowing what occurs on the property can help determine the stability of the habitat. Up until now, there has never been a formal survey of flora and fauna on the Ironwood property. It is for this reason that work on a NRI was started early in the spring of 2005.
To date, there are 103 species of animals and 138 species plants, totalling 241 species that have been counted on Ironwood Outdoor Center's property. Ironwood Outdoor Center's Floristic Quality Index (FQI) score of 45.6 is proof that the quality of land "possess sufficient conservatism and richness to be of profound importance from a regional perspective." according to Wilhelm's scientific research papers.
The property has been a host to at least 5 state-listed species:
- Bald Eagle, now listed as threatened.
- Great Blue Heron, Winter Wren and Box Turtle are listed as species of concern by the State of NJ.
- Gratiola Virginiana, Virginia Hedge Hyssop, ranked S2 (imperiled)
